In a move that can only be called surreal, the game features Norio Hikone's 'glimmering animals,' which were made popular by the package for the original SNES version of Shigesato Itoi's No. This is largely because the water is not transparent and it does not offer any reflection either. While the environments are big, varied and animated with different climates, the actual bodies of water look a bit stale in comparison with other fishing games. The game's visuals are super realistic, but also slightly disappointing.

It's very important to watch both the underwater action and the overwater rod together in order to determine exactly how to reel the fish in best. Moving the analog stick up or down works to add force or slack to the line. The majority of the screen shows a player's line, rod and fish location while a small sub-window displays the underwater fish fighting to break free of a hook. To give players the most intuitive control of the action possible, the game utilizes a dual-camera system. Of course, this game is really about fishing and Nintendo has done its best to simulate the sport accurately. The 3D environments, which shift in climate at a natural pace (displaying clouds, rain, clear skies, etc.), are huge and blend seamlessly together with the bodies of water they are highlighting. The game features a very impressive fishing engine that, according to Nintendo, is leaps and bounds beyond anything available for the market currently and this is because the title is 'created from the fundamentals of bass fishing so there is none of the 'falseness' of games.' Players can go anywhere, be it on the water or otherwise, and explore. Nintendo debuted Shigesato's Bass Fishing at its annual Spaceworld event in Japan earlier this week. It was devised to simulate the jerk and pull of reeling in a big fish. And while we certainly appreciate Star Fox's innovations, the true inspiration for the little rumbling device was and has always been Shigesato's Bass Fishing. Ask any Nintendo 64 owner what game inspired the Rumble Pak and you're likely to get the same answer: Star Fox 64, of course.
